In Lily's Kitchen
I am at home this morning (my Parents are in charge of the shop) so I have
decided to make Alfie some cheesy breakfast bars from from my Lily's Kitchen
cookbook (page 85)... here's the recipe if you fancy having a go yourself, they
are so easy to make.
Cheesy breakfast bars were approved by all, including the kitty! Please
note, I made 2.5 times the amount the recipe specifies, because I wanted extra
for Bobby & Paddy (and I wanted to use my big heart shaped roaster)!

Let it Snow!
I
asked for snowy pics on my Facebook & Twitter pages and I got such a great
response! Thanks so much to everyone who sent me their pics, I loved looking at
them! At one point, my statistics showed that over 1,000 people on Facebook
were talking about Barkitty which is phenomenal!
Here’s
a selection of some of the wonderful pics I received!
I
had an email from Vets4Pets which gave some sound advice for keeping your pets
safe in the snow. I thought these points were worth sharing…
Despite their fur,
pets can feel the cold just the sam e
as humans do, and freezing temperatures can create problems if you’re not
prepared for winter. Here are some ‘Winter watch outs’ and handy tips on how to
make sure your pet is happy and healthy during the chilly winter months.
Try not to walk your dog on ice
Dogs can slip and injure themselves just like us. Even more important is to make sure they don’t run onto frozen lakes or canals as they could fall into icy water if the ice is too thin.
Don’t let them eat snow
Your pet might see snow as a novelty butdan gerous
objects or chemicals may be hidden in the snow. Also, eating snow can cause
stomach upset and even hypothermia.
Antifreeze
Beware of antifreeze. Surprisingly, antifreeze smells and tastes good to your pet but it is poisonous so make sure it is stored well out of reach.
Provide somewhere warm
Make sure that there is somewhere warm and cosy for your pet to sleep. Cats will curl up next to anything hot to keep warm, which can include under the bonnet of a car, so make sure you keep an eye on them. Provide outdoor pets, such as guinea pigs and rabbits with extra bedding, and consider moving them into a shed or unused garage for extra shelter whilst it is cold.
Freezing water bowl
If your pet’s water bowl is normally kept outside, check it regularly that ice hasn’t formed and that they have access to water.

Run, Forest!
I
had a rare day off from the shop today, so we did our favourite thing and plonked
our JuJu wellies on and took Alfie & Bobby out for a walk in Salcey Forest !
It
was a really crisp winter’s day, so we wrapped up warm and paced it out! The
dogs got really muddy but they had a fantastic time! My sister Carla, and her
boyfriend Ryan came along which was nice. We have lots to talk about as Carla
is 4 months pregnant – due to have a baby on Alfie’s first birthday!
Most
people who live in and around Northamptonshire know about Salcey Forest
and the ‘tree top’ walk, which is great for dogs (and kids)! We actually don’t
go up to the viewing deck with the dogs anymore, as it’s quite busy and they
only get under people’s feet! However, it’s well worth going up there, as you
can see for miles. On a clear day you can see right acros s
the town.
We
prefer to follow a route which takes about an hour, with plenty of puddles and
interest for the dogs, and cut through woodlands between footpaths as there’s
plenty for them to jump over and sniff out!
The
café area is well equipped for dogs with plenty of drinking water available!
Oh, and cappuccinos for those who prefer something more sophisticated! Don’t
forget you need to take some change with you, as you do have to pay to park.
We
take Alfie to some fields in Brafield-on-the-Green in Northamptonshire every
morning for a good walk, as there are no distractions which is good for his
whistle training! There are some beautiful public footpaths around there, so it’s
really worth visiting for a good walk. Get to know the route so you can plan
how far you want to go, otherwise you could go for miles and miles which may
not be suitable if you have a young, or elderly dog. The route we take involves
bridges, duck ponds, styles, wildlife, farmhouses and lots of puddles which is
great for keeping us all interested. Just be aware of the cattle grids you
encounter on these kinds of walks, as your dog could be really injured if they
reach one before you do!

(Twenty) thirteen... lucky for some
Happy new year to all of my loyal supporters! I hope there aren’t too many sore heads this morning!?! Thirteen is ironically my lucky number, as I am a ‘Jinks’ born on the 13th and married on the 13th (27 years apart of course), so I think this year will be a good one for me!
Barkitty HQ is buzzing with ideas
today to make 2013 a bigger and better year... join the Barkitty VIP club here
(for free) to be first to hear about new things ...
Plus, there are new products in development which are
