Don't Judge Me!

I was thrilled when Katty asked me to be a judge at Welton's first fun dog show yesterday afternoon! It was a wonderful atmosphere there, full of happy families and waggiest tails, and a few familiar faces from the shop!

These were the categories:

1. Waggiest Tail
2. Dog and owner look alike
3. Best fancy dressed dog
4. Handsomest Dog
5. Best Trick
6. Best Veteran
7. Cutest puppy

The playing fields were full of gorgeous dogs, so it was a very difficult task in all categories! I thought I’d share a few of the wonderful winners with you.

Let it Snow!

I asked for snowy pics on my Facebook & Twitter pages and I got such a great response! Thanks so much to everyone who sent me their pics, I loved looking at them! At one point, my statistics showed that over 1,000 people on Facebook were talking about Barkitty which is phenomenal!

Here’s a selection of some of the wonderful pics I received!

I had an email from Vets4Pets which gave some sound advice for keeping your pets safe in the snow. I thought these points were worth sharing…

Despite their fur, pets can feel the cold just the same as humans do, and freezing temperatures can create problems if you’re not prepared for winter. Here are some ‘Winter watch outs’ and handy tips on how to make sure your pet is happy and healthy during the chilly winter months.

Try not to walk your dog on ice
Dogs can slip and injure themselves just like us. Even more important is to make sure they don’t run onto frozen lakes or canals as they could fall into icy water if the ice is too thin.

Don’t let them eat snow
Your pet might see snow as a novelty but dangerous objects or chemicals may be hidden in the snow. Also, eating snow can cause stomach upset and even hypothermia.

Antifreeze
Beware of antifreeze. Surprisingly, antifreeze smells and tastes good to your pet but it is poisonous so make sure it is stored well out of reach.

Provide somewhere warm
Make sure that there is somewhere warm and cosy for your pet to sleep. Cats will curl up next to anything hot to keep warm, which can include under the bonnet of a car, so make sure you keep an eye on them. Provide outdoor pets, such as guinea pigs and rabbits with extra bedding, and consider moving them into a shed or unused garage for extra shelter whilst it is cold.

Freezing water bowl
If your pet’s water bowl is normally kept outside, check it regularly that ice hasn’t formed and that they have access to water.

The Grange Park Community Dog Show

August 27th 2012

Jason and I had a fantastic day at the Grange Park Community Dog show yesterday! The weather was great and we met so many lovely people and their dogs! It was in aid of raising money for Medical Detection Dogs, which is a charity that trains dogs to help people with life threatening health conditions, giving them greater independence and above all saving their lives on a daily basis.

Bobby competed in the ‘Best Puppy’ competition but unfortunately did not win :( We’re hoping next year there will be a ‘barkiest dog’ competition, as he will win that paws down.

 
Well done to everyone who took part, especially Barkitty regular Fergie, who came second in the ‘prettiest girl’ contest!

Thanks to PCSO Charlotte who organises the annual event – we look forward to seeing you next year!

Barking on Ice

I thought I'd share with you some tips for keeping dogs and cats happy in the heat with some icy cool recipes...

First a great tip from Helen this morning to keep your dogs cool... make up some chicken stock, let it cool, then pour into ice cube trays and freeze. Fun for your dogs to play with and cools them down. Just don't put them in your G&T by accident :/

An icepop recipe for your dog:-
Make up 1/2pint low salt gravy as normal, add 1/2 pint cold water, pour into a cake tray, add half a carrot to it, put in freezer and freeze.
Take one large tin of tuna in springwater (could use other smellier fish such as mackerel), place in blender, use same tin to measure out one tin of cold water, blend together, place in cake tin, freeze.
You could also try, ...mixing fruit and plain yoghurt to make a fruity youghurty one.

Place things such as peanut butter, tuna etc in an Orbee Tuff 'woof' ball and freeze that.

Put icecubes in the dogs water bowl. Or give them to chew on.
get the sprinkler out, if you dont have a hosepipeban.
