In light of the tragic death of 14 year old Jade Anderson in
Manchester yesterday I wondered if it was a bit odd to be joking about dogs on
my Facebook page today... but I reasoned that pages like mine promote GOOD,
responsible dog ownership, and how much love they can bring to our lives.
Jade
was tragically attacked and killed by 4 dogs in a house yesterday afternoon.
The dogs were thought to have been Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Bull
Mastiffs.
Unfortunately there will always be cases of dogs attacking adults, children and other animals, and I don't really know what the answer is, or how we can stop it??? I personally am really ‘for’ the issuing of affordable dog licenses. Adopting a dog should be seen as a serious, lifelong commitment to raising a living creature in the right way, and a license is a way of contracting to this agreement.
It would also mean that when someone decides upon getting a puppy or adult dog, they have to get their license approved before collecting, which means they have time and space to really be certain about what they are doing. Probably even allowing an officer to check out their home and background etc first.
I wish there was an easy answer. The enforcement of compulsory microchipping by 2016 is a step in the right direction. I see first hand the increasing popularity of dog ownership, which is a great thing. But with that sensible rules and regulations need to be in place and enforced to protect both dogs and humans.
