A Sad News Day

In light of the tragic death of 14 year old Jade Anderson in Manchester yesterday I wondered if it was a bit odd to be joking about dogs on my Facebook page today... but I reasoned that pages like mine promote GOOD, responsible dog ownership, and how much love they can bring to our lives.

Jade was tragically attacked and killed by 4 dogs in a house yesterday afternoon. The dogs were thought to have been Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Bull Mastiffs.

Unfortunately there will always be cases of dogs attacking adults, children and other animals, and I don't really know what the answer is, or how we can stop it??? I personally am really ‘for’ the issuing of affordable dog licenses. Adopting a dog should be seen as a serious, lifelong commitment to raising a living creature in the right way, and a license is a way of contracting to this agreement.

It would also mean that when someone decides upon getting a puppy or adult dog, they have to get their license approved before collecting, which means they have time and space to really be certain about what they are doing. Probably even allowing an officer to check out their home and background etc first.

I wish there was an easy answer. The enforcement of compulsory microchipping by 2016 is a step in the right direction. I see first hand the increasing popularity of dog ownership, which is a great thing. But with that sensible rules and regulations need to be in place and enforced to protect both dogs and humans.

The Lifestyle Show

Last summer Barkitty was brand new, so I was very focused on being in the shop and getting our name heard by as many people as possible. This summer I am still doing that, but have decided to take to the road and have a change of scenery.

So as well as The Pet Show I’m booked in for in July, I am now having a stall at The Lifestyle Show in Weston Favell Shopping Centre in Northampton. This is very local to me so I am looking forward to giving it a try and seeing some familiar faces.

We’ll be there from 9.30am to 5.30pm Monday 8th April – Thursday 11th April so come along and say hello! Sharon will be with me at least one day (date TBC) making up personalised name collars as you wait, so you can choose colours, letters and charms and take it home that day rather than wait for delivery. Don’t forget to measure your dog’s neck or bring their existing collar with you if you’re interested in those!

Look forward to seeing you there!

Dog's Dinner Dressed as Lamb

I made a roast dinner for my family today – and could never leave out the furbabies! We had roast beef, and they had Sunshine Stew from my Lily’s Kitchen Cook book!

Highly recommended, bowls were cleared very quickly! The photograph doesn’t look very appealing but it was thoroughly enjoyed! I didn’t use any green beans as I forgot to buy them (bad mother), but I think that a splash of green would improve the appearance too!

I calculated that this cost me around £3.50 (I did have some of the ingredients already), and this made 4 portions – so is relatively economic for a treat!

The Greatest Show on Earth (probably)

We are seriously excited to announce we will be having a stand at The Pet Show 2013 in July!

The Pet Show 2013 will be the largest indoor and outdoor pet show the UK has ever seen. Taking place at Stoneleigh Park, in the heart of Warwickshire on the weekend of 20/21st July 2013, this unique event is aimed at all ages. With more than 20,000 visitors expected over the course of the two days, it's one date in the diary not to be missed. With a main arena showcasing the best in animal displays and with more than 100 smaller attractions, there is something for all the family.

There will be dedicated feature areas for dogs, cats, small animals, birds, horses and tropical and marine fish. Displays will include The Dog Agility Grand Finals and an awe-inspiring birds of prey flying demonstration. Meet and greet areas will allow you to get up close and personal, feeding, grooming or finding out more about everything from Shires to parrots.

Fun Activities and 'have a go' workshops, 100's of Trade Stands, Free Samples, Competitions & Big Show Savings on all things pets related - a must see for pet lovers of all ages.

And as if all this wasn’t enough – you’ll be sure to see me and Alfie!

The Paw Law

Did you know… The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your postcode is optional (but we would strongly advise that you include it), and your telephone number is also optional (but advisable).

It is a sad fact that thousands of pets go missing every year and are not returned to their owner because they have no form of identification. As animals cannot speak for themselves, it is extremely important to know that they are properly identified so that if lost, when found, they can be returned to their relieved owner as quickly as possible.

You can be fined up to £5,000 if your dog does not wear an identification tag.

At Barkitty we sell a full range of high quality Red Dingo stainless steel tags, which are guaranteed to be engraved for life; with a huge selection of sizes, designs and colours. See the range available to order in store here – www.reddingo.com. Red Dingo have great looking tags that include free personalised engraving and delivery.

Our tags are typically available in small, medium and large sizes. A small number of cat specific tags are available only in small sizes.
