Small Business Saturday UK

Wow! Blog number 200 already! You must be bored sick of me now J

You may have seen the ads on TV for Small Business Saturday. It’s a great campaign, and essential for shops like mine. We NEED the support and custom from people like you to enable us to continue trading.

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. In 2014 Small Business Saturday UK will take place on Saturday December 6th.

Plus, we have our Christmas Collar event on that day, so even more reason to come and see us!

Please consider the cause, and shop local on Saturday 6th, and whenever you can. Use us or lose us!

7 mile

Today I was feeling particularly energetic (and also panicky about fitting in Christmas party dresses), so Alfie and I decided to ‘take on’ Pitsford reservoir. It’s a really good walk for you and your dog, totalling 10K or nearly 7 miles.

We parked at Brixworth Country Park (there are other parking alternatives), and looped all around the waters edge, all on good, solid pathways. This is suitable for pushchairs and prams, and most age groups seem to be doing fine. Obviously, you can make it as much of a work out as you require. We jogged as much of it as we could, but it’s a really enjoyable walk. With some jogging and walking it took us 1 hour 35 minutes. As a walk you’re probably looking at 2 hours, or as a run more like 1 hour.

We really enjoyed it, and recommend it if you haven’t been. The only downsides are lack of ‘poo’ bins, and parking charges. At Brixworth it’s £2.60 for 12 hours, which is great value if you’re there all day, but a bit of a pain if you’re only there 2 hours.

Let me know if you give it a try yourselves J

Makes you feel good, don't it!

As you may well remember (or still have on your wall), we held the ‘Puparazzi’ event last year, and produced a fabulous 2014 Barkitty Calender, in association with Amour Pix.

I thought you might like to see where the money went. A cheque was donated directly to Soi Dog UK, and the remaining balance was sent to a very special lady working in Thailand, Soot Liang Woo runs the WSK Shelter.

I wanted to share a big THANK YOU with you all, for the money we raised from our 'Puparazzi' calendar from this year. In addition to supporting dogs who were homeless and facing the meat trade in Thailand; our sizeable donation has also helped cats.

Some of our money has been spent on cat food and medicines for the WSK Shelter. There is no budget for cat food and so they have to eat dog food unless Soot buys them something. She has got food now for the next couple of months.
Please support Soi Dog -> https://www.soidog.org
and the WSK Shelter for Dogs & Cats here ->https://www.facebook.com/WSKProject

I’d like to personally thank Rachel Barton for introducing me to the work of Soi Dog, and in turn, the work Soot does. Once again I’d like to thank Amour Pix for their help in creating the calendar, and ‘Graphics and Print’ who produced it for us, free of charge. Also, thanks to everyone who took part, and of course, everyone who bought one. We’ve really enjoyed using ours this year.

Lumitubes

As the dark nights draw in, dog walking becomes a more difficult, and dangerous task. That’s why we’re stocking the brand new Lumitubes by Red Dingo.

Statistics from the PDSA have revealed that during winter the veterinary costs of pets being involved in road accidents rises by 50 per cent, with the chances of your pet being involved in an accident increasing by eighty per cent.

To protect your pet the PDSA advises wearing high visibility clothing and accessories, which is why Dapper is launching the new Lumitube Illuminated Safety Collar from Red Dingo.

The brilliant Lumitube is lightweight and contains two powerful LEDs, which create an ultra-bright, even glow around the whole neck. This gives superb 360-degree visibility, unlike flashing collar attachments that are only visible from the front.

The Lumitube collar is available in two lengths and the tubing can actually be cut to size creating the perfect fit for any dog. Quick release connectors allow the collar to be assembled and disassembled in seconds and, when fitted correctly, the Lumitube should slip on and off a dog’s head without needing to undo the loop. The Lumitube collar is powered by just one AAA battery, which is included, and replacements are inexpensive and widely available.

The Lumitube is super stylish too as it is available in a choice of four dazzling colours. If you have more than one dog you can colour-code your pack so you know exactly who’s who in the dark.

Also, The Lumitube Illuminated Safety Collar is waterproof so nocturnal adventurers can indulge in a spot of night swimming without their owners losing sight of them.

We have a winner!

Thanks to everyone who entered the Great Barkitty Bake Off this year! Several magnificent entries were placed, featuring gravy bones, mashed potatoes and celery ‘trees’; and the difficult job of judging a winner was given to BBC Radio Northampton DJ and baking enthusiast, Bernie Keith. After careful consideration he chose to crown Helen Davis, from Thrapston, the winner.

Bernie said of the entries “they’re all very good and I’m sure not one would last half a minute with Riles [his Schnauzer]”

Their prize was a luxury gift bundle from Barkitty, along with a voucher to spend on delicacies at The Larder Deli, in Castle Ashby. Following the success of the event, hosted online we hope to run the competition every year, envisioning it will only get better and better!

Ladies who meet

I attended my first AAW meeting today, which is Jo Cameron’s Achievers Academy for Women. I got to meet with a small group of successful women who are in business, and chat about our work. Hopefully this can only help Barkitty grow!

It was a very informal, welcoming environment, and I think it would be very valuable for me to become a member. If you are a woman looking for inspiration in your professional life, then see the website here -> http://www.achieversacademyforwomen.com/

Sunny Hunny

The sun was shining this morning, so we decided to take Alfie to the beach for the day! It was so nice. We drove to Heacham and walked down the beach to Hunstanton from there. Alfie is a real beach babe, and loved playing in the sea and running around!

On the way back we stopped at Burnham Market and found a very glamourous, yet dog friendly pub, The Hoste. I had an amazing glass of Pinot Grigio in there, highly recommened… hiccup J

Family Fun

If you are looking for something to do with the kiddies (and the dog) at the weekend look no further than Castle Ashby Shopping Yard & Gardens. Obviously, the World’s best (in my humble opinion!) Pet Boutique is situated here, but there’s a lot more to do.

If you take a little trip to the Gardens there’s another lovely café and plant centre, with a totally fab, large children’s play area! Alfie & I popped over there today with our friends. Emily and I sat outside with our tea and coffee & walnut cake (with plenty of water and shade for Alfie), and Luke & Holly Mae reluctantly stopped listening to our gossip and went off on the play equipment!

If you want to venture further into the gardens, there is a charge of £5.50 per adult, and under 10s go free. OAPs & over 10s are £5, and a family of 2 adults & 2 children is £18. Dogs are permitted into the gardens, providing they are walked on a lead in all areas of the formal garden. They may run free in the Arboretum, which is really nice.

End of Summer Sale

Alas, the end of summer is upon us, and the nights are already drawing in – but all is not lost. We are having a huge sale weekend on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th October, with at least 10% off EVERYTHING*, and up to 50% OFF some items.

So come and grab a bargain before the winter stock takes over J
* Excludes items that have been pre-ordered, or require ordering in specially

Taxi (dermy) for Barkitty

So... did anyone watch 'All Creatures Great & Stuffed' on C4 last night? A documentary about taxidermy, and people who have their pets stuffed and keep them forever. What do you think? Is this something you would do?

I was on BBC Radio Northampton this lunchtime talking about it – listen to it here from approx 36 minutes in: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p025ndbk

If you missed the show, watch it on Channel 4OD here ->

We're Game

Yesterday Alfie and I had a fab day with Louise & Mac at the CLA Game Fair at Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. The sun was shining, and we had a lovely time with our chocolates, people watching and, of course, a bit of shopping! The Joules tent with its big discounts was hard to resist!!

The boys even got to have a swim in the palace lakes, and got lots of fuss, as usual!

Next year, the CLA Game Fair takes place in Leeds from July 31st – August 2nd, and we thoroughly recommend it for a great day out!

Working Like a Dog

Today is ‘Bring Your Dog To Work Day’, which is everyday for Barkitty! Did you take your dog to work? We’d love to see your pics!

We love this pic of Pugwash at work at Nordic Walking UK in Olney. Don’t think he’ll be winning employee of the month though, napping on the job!

Make sure you go on to https://bringyourdogtoworkday.co.uk/ and donate your money to the charities as it’s for great causes!

In the Dog House

Dog’s Today Magazine posted this on their Facebook page, and I thought it was worth sharing with summer holidays ahead…

Could kennels be the holiday your dog looks forward to? Have you been beating yourself up with guilt when reclining on your foreign sun lounger? Research suggests so...
"Some dogs find kennels exciting, not stressful
New research suggests that dogs who spend a short time in boarding kennels may not find it unduly stressful and could in fact find the change of scenery exciting.
This hypothesis directly contradicts previous research which suggests that dogs experience acute stress following admission to kennels, and chronic stress in response to prolonged kennelling.
The study, published in the journal Physiology & Behavior, also suggests that dogs may even view kennelling as an exciting change of scene, at least in the short-term.
The team, which included academics from the University of Lincoln, UK, University of Birmingham, Queen’s University Belfast and The Royal Veterinary College, measured a range of stress parameters in 29 privately-owned dogs - both at home and in one of three private boarding kennel establishments in Northern Ireland.
The study aimed to test the validity of a range of physiological, physical and behavioural welfare indicators and to establish baseline values reflecting good dog welfare.
Physical measurements included skin dryness, nose temperature, core body temperature and amount of food eaten. Behavioural measurements included spontaneous behaviours such as lip licking, paw lifting, yawning, shaking and restlessness. Physiological measures included stress hormones (corticosteroids) and epinephrine (adrenaline).
The research revealed that dogs have higher levels of arousal, colder noses and were generally more active in kennels than when they were at home.
The welfare of kennelled dogs is of concern, given that many experience minimal social contact, exercise and control over their environment as well as unpredictable and high levels of noise, novelty and disrupted routines.
Based on existing research it was assumed that dogs would show higher levels of stress in the kennel compared to the home environment.
The most widely used physiological indicator of canine welfare is urinary cortisol (hormone secreted following activation of one of the major stress response systems) and creatinine (chemical waste product created by the liver) ratios (C/Cr), which is considered a valid measure of acute and chronic stress in dogs. However, the reliability of this has been questioned.
The study revealed that C/Cr was significantly higher in the kennel compared to the home environment but cortisol levels have also been found to increase after exercise and excitement, and appear to provide an indication of arousal without specifying the emotional reason of that arousal.
Dr Lisa Collins, from the School of Life Sciences, University of Lincoln, UK, said: “Many owners find leaving their dog at a boarding kennels a stressful experience. However, this study suggests that although dogs appeared to have a higher level of overall arousal or excitement in kennels compared with their state at home, this arousal is not necessarily due to dogs experiencing kennels as negatively stressful. The emotional reasons for the behavioural and physiological responses of the dogs were ambiguous and no definitive evidence was found to suggest that dogs were negatively stressed by kennelling.
“Our findings did strongly suggest that C/Cr, epinephrine and nose temperature are robust measures of psychological arousal in dogs. Nonetheless, these measures can be easily misinterpreted and do not provide unequivocal indicators of psychological stress. Findings appear to suggest that the dogs in this study did not perceive admission to boarding kennels as an aversive stressor and perhaps, instead, perceived kennelling as an exciting change of scene, at least in the short-term.”

The team recommends further investigation to determine the validity of measurements tested as indicators of acute and chronic stress in domestic dogs. "
